A Strategic Island Outpost

Pungudutivu is a small, historically significant island located just west of the Jaffna Peninsula. Connected to the mainland by a series of scenic road causeways, it is surrounded by the calm, turquoise coastal waters of the Palk Strait.

A Journey Through Time

From ancient inscriptions to colonial records

Puvangu Divaina

In ancient records, the island is referred to as "Puvangu Divaina," with inscriptions indicating its long-standing role as a vital maritime and cultural hub in the Jaffna kingdom.

Middleburg

Under Dutch colonial rule, the island was known as Middleburg. This era left unique imprints on the administrative and architectural landscape of the Jaffna islands.

The Pungai Tree

The name Pungudutivu is widely believed to be derived from the Pungai tree (Indian Beech), which once flourished across the island's coastal soil.

Modern Era

The post-war reconstruction and diaspora growth have transformed Pungudutivu into a globally connected community. Our members abroad continue to contribute to the island's development and cultural preservation.

புங்குடுதீவு கீதம்

O Golden City of Pungudutivu, land embraced by the surging tides! Abode of coconut and palmyra groves, where noble souls find their sanctuary! A unique isle where prosperity flows, where scholars share the honey of wisdom, Where hearts of steel and spirits bold dwell together in timeless grace! A sacred soil of divine grace, triumphant over every trial, Where four faiths light the path to peace, finding unity in the ultimate truth. With Vallan guarding the eastern gate and Irubitti marking the western shore, Lush forests bloom in the heart of the land, from Veera Hill south to Ooraithivu north. A radiant pearl amidst the seven isles, shining with an eternal glow, Like a sacred tilak on Jaffna's brow, you stand as a beacon of light! With temples, shrines, and halls of art, and lighthouses to guide the way, Madathuveli stands as the gateway, where Goddess Kannaki guards the righteous path. Guardian deities watch over every shore, with Pallavathivu by our side, A land of historical pride and glory—this is the Brindavan where Tamil thrives!

People & Faith

Diversity in Unity

The heart of Pungudutivu beats within its people—primarily Sri Lankan Tamils who have maintained a vibrant social fabric for centuries. While the majority are devout Hindus with majestic temples dotting the landscape, the island also cherishes its historic Christian community.

Ancient Hindu temples like Sithi Vinayagar Temple serve as spiritual anchors for the community.

Historic churches represent a long tradition of faith and religious harmony on the island.

Connectivity & Routes

Accessibility is vital to our island. Regular bus routes connect our villages directly to Jaffna town. For maritime travel, boat routes from Kurikadduwan jetty connect us to neighboring islands like Nainativu, a major pilgrimage destination.

Coastal Leisure Park

We are looking forward! Recent community initiatives, such as the Pungudutivu Coastal Leisure Park, are designed to enhance our public spaces, providing recreational facilities and preserving the natural beauty of our shoreline.

Digital Connectivity

Modern infrastructure continues to reach our island with expanding mobile networks and internet services. Digital literacy programs empower our community to participate in the global knowledge economy while preserving our cultural identity.
