Pungudutivu is a small, historically significant island located just west of the Jaffna Peninsula. Connected to the mainland by a series of scenic road causeways, it is surrounded by the calm, turquoise coastal waters of the Palk Strait.
From ancient inscriptions to colonial records
In ancient records, the island is referred to as "Puvangu Divaina," with inscriptions indicating its long-standing role as a vital maritime and cultural hub in the Jaffna kingdom.
Under Dutch colonial rule, the island was known as Middleburg. This era left unique imprints on the administrative and architectural landscape of the Jaffna islands.
The name Pungudutivu is widely believed to be derived from the Pungai tree (Indian Beech), which once flourished across the island's coastal soil.
The post-war reconstruction and diaspora growth have transformed Pungudutivu into a globally connected community. Our members abroad continue to contribute to the island's development and cultural preservation.
